I've recently joined the board of directors of the Michigan Nutrition Association. The MNA's mission is to ensure public access to health care providers who incorporate nutrition counseling in their practice and to promote nutrition and health care through a competitive, open and transparent system. A licensure law was passed in 2006 that amends the Public Health Code to provide for the licensure of dietitians and nutritionists. Although the bill was set to take effect on July 1, 2007, the Michigan Board of Dietetics and Nutrition has not yet promulgated rules for licensure.
The law goes beyond title protection for dietitians and nutritionists by prohibiting any health professional from incorporating dietetics and nutrition care services defined as PA "the integration and application of the scientific principles of food, nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, management, and behavioral and social sciences to achieve and maintain the health of individuals," unless it is already within their stated scope of practice.
If you are interested in preserving nutrition freedom, I invite you to get engaged and spend a few minutes learning more about our efforts to protect the rights of all consumers and the Michigan health practitioners who incorporate nutritional coaching in their practices.
Live well,
Shelley
